In my junior fall at MIT I took the class 2.008 Design and Manufacturing II. This class is the second in a series of classes on the design process and how things are made. Our first project in the class was an introduction to using Mastercam to create G-code for the mill and lathe. My partner and I, both from California, designed a paperweight that showcased mountains of California, such as Mount Whitney. We created the desired outline on Illustrator and used the dwg file to create the paperweight in Solidworks. From there we used the Solidworks drawings in Mastercam to create the G-code. The lathe we used for a simple dome shape and the mill was used for the mountain outlines.
