Minimalist Throne

In my senior fall at MIT I took the class 4.031 Design Studio: Objects and Interaction. For this class, we were tasked with designing and creating our own chairs. I decided I wanted to build a minimalist, throne-like chair. Originally, I began looking at interestingly shaped chairs and liked the style of decorative chairs, the kind that are short, have no back, and sit against the wall. While showing some drawings to friends, they commented that my ideas looked like thrones. From there I began to think about have a larger piece that would make an impact. I continued with the idea that the chair would be backless, but increased the height of the arms. The armrests sit high, but still at a comfortable
height. The minimalism came from the idea that the chair would be something that had clean lines and was easy to build. The chair was built with 1x8 planks of wood, but since the chair was designed with a width of 16in, one day of building was spent wood-gluing pieces together. The next day of building, I assembled the prepared pieces together, and the throne was complete.
